I find great beauty in the way a person can take an idea, a story, and from it draw conclusions and find applications that can alter the way we live our lives, or at least shift our perspectives on the journey. To see the big picture, the grand scheme, and craft a narrative palatable to your listeners in both scope and pace. To withhold and to hint, letting both detail and lack articulate routes that to follow. This is not easy. It takes practice and patience and skill. Poetic language enlarges the hearer, swelling and stirring our hearts to know and be more than we have known or been.
But to accomplish this within the space of a few minutes, with no more than a handful of words, complicating it all with metered rhythm and melody... to write a song, a good song, is a task that seems almost impossible for me. I know it is feasible for some, perhaps even simple to a few, but for me that mountain sits too far on the horizon.
It doesn't sit too far, it's closer than you think :)
ReplyDeleteIt's not too far on the horizon. I have the same problem of conforming many thoughts into smaller ones and placing them on one sheet of paper. What helps me is the fact that God doesn't care if your song has rhythm, melody, a time frame, 2 verses, a chorus and a bridge. He just wants you to glorify Him and give him the praise he deserves. When we focus on that then our attitudes on song writing will change, at least mine did. Remember that we are writing songs for God, not other people, and especially not ourselves.
